Christmas is the time to remember and realize the importance of giving oneself for others. From the life of Jesus, we can learn the new meaning of ‘giving oneself’. It is the time to reflect upon giving our all. The Saints of the Church, the social reformers taught us that, when one gives oneself for others, the meaning of our life is achieved. Today in our small world, our parents have joined in the plan of God and given us life, which is the greatest gift that each one of us enjoys. So are not our parents a symbol of sacrifice?
Giving life is God’s mission. Historically, a mother is symbolized as ‘sacrifice and giving of oneself’. It is being enacted today with the heroic act of the Kalyan Mathrusangam (The Mothers’ Association of the Diocese of Kalyan, India). After a 2 month long awareness campaign on Organ Donation, they organized “Nav Jeevan” (New Life) rally in Mumbai. More than 3000 women came together, pledged on organ donation and participated in the 2.5 km long Nava Jeevan rally from St. Augustine school to Presentation convent school in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, India on 06 Dec 2014. Through their campaign, they succeeded in registering more than 5000 organ donors, aging from 18 years of age. The number of donors, as per today, is as follows: Heart-4128, Pancreas-3926, Corneas-9298, Lungs-8052, Kidneys-8562, Liver-3843 and Whole Body-50. The Organ donation project is done under the Karunya Trust (the social activity wing of the Diocese of Kalyan) in coordination with zonal transplant coordination centre, Sion, Mumbai, India. The donor cards are issued by Karunya Trust.
‘The one who is pained can see the tear of other’. Is there anyone who can understand others’ pain better than a mother? So dear mothers of the Kalyan Diocese, I salute and thank each one of you for the great example that you have shown during this Christmas season. The media might not sidelined it, but you have moved and challenged us to do good for the others. Your witnessing act is more than praiseworthy and repayable.
